Substance Abuse Prevention Coalitions

Together, we can keep alcohol and substances out of the hands of our children.

Tri-County Community Action Agency coordinates Prevention Coalitions in the towns of Johnston, Smithfield, and North Providence.  The coalitions are comprised of major stakeholders in the community, including representatives from schools, substance abuse and mental health, municipalities, youth services, law enforcement, and health care, to establish annual community-wide plans to promote emotional health and wellness, and to deliver substance abuse

prevention services and strategies to the community.

LGBTQ Youth and Substance Use Prevention Report

The Region 1: Southern providence County Regional Prevention Coalition recently released the LGBTQ Youth and Substance Use Prevention Report.  The report takes an in-depth look at the risk factors that LGBTQ youth face, and the various physical and behavioral health issues (including substance use) that may result from these factors.  LGBTQ youth are twice as likely to use substances compared to their straight and non-transgender peers.  The purpose of the report is to provide a summary of risk factors which contribute to the substance use related health inequalities within the LGBTQ youth community, as well as protective factors.  The report data was collected from students ages 12-17 from Cranston, Johnston, North Providence, Scituate and Smithfield.
